You can easily grow a very deep love affair with the whole DOCG Prosecco region and an outstanding part of this magnificent wine region is that of Asolo. What this place holds is a truly amazing cultural and historical charm steeped in history and today producing some of the finest examples of sparkling wines which are enjoyed across the world. Architecture, gastronomy, scenery, the people, the wines and so much more awaits you with the only thing against should you wish to visit is time of which even a lifetime of exploring will never uncover all its history and splendour.” Christopher Walkey

With thanks to the Consorzio Vini Asolo Montello I visited their relatively unknown yet highly regarded Italian wine region with a few days of touring wineries across the region from smaller independent growers to the co-operatives producing bottles in their millions yearly. A complete visit taking in the history, the culture, the wines and the makers and a tour of wonderful vineyards stretching across the picturesque region.

Described by Giosuè Carducci as the “city of a hundred horizons” for as you tour what is one of Italy’s most historical towns you can easily fall in love with the narrow streets giving a variety of architectural delights and art, the wonderful far reaching views (Venice is seen on a clear day) and the slow paced lifestyle of the residents. There is no wonder that it has attracted so many famous folk in art and poetry.

Asolo is a most charming historical town and surrounding it the slopping hills dotted with vineyards offers wonderfully produced wines all with the DOCG classification (DOCG Asolo Prosecco, DOCG Asolo Prosecco “sparkling” and DOCG Asolo Prosecco “Spumante Superiore”). Wine growers range from just a few thousand bottles produced annually to those making millions, the single vineyard grower to the co-operative made up of 100’s. Variety is key in any wine region to enable the region to really express it’s wines, though a common theme is seen in Asolo thanks to it’s terroir and the minerals the land holds.

Asolo has brought, and continues to do so, many famous faces and businesses to enjoy the lifestyle it offers, from Napoleon to Ernest Hemingway and Queen Mother of England to a recent wedding of Wyatt Rockefeller, the son of the wealthy, American bankers family. Restaurants and bars are a delight to explore with some offering magnificent views of surrounding Asolan hills and it is recommended, if budgets permit, to experience the luxury of Hotel Villa Cipriani.
