Eton Mess and Sparkling Wine Pairing

27th April 2022

Slovenian Fizz and Eton Mess

A traditional English dessert consisting of Strawberries, Meringue and Whipped Cream, which is also great for Summer. This will be a perfect time to select a bottle of Award-Winning Sparkling Wine in the Dessert Category to pair with the Eton Mess.

The Eton Mess was first mentioned in print during 1893, they say it originated from Eton College (you can already guess where part of the name came from), it was apparently served at their annual cricket against the students of Harrow School, but the dessert was also served at Harrow School where they named it the Harrow Mess, so a rivalry on the pitch and in the kitchen.

The original Eton Mess was made out of only Ice Cream/Cream and Strawberries or Bananas, the Meringue part would come later, the traditional Eton Mess uses Strawberries, but you can find the Lancing Mess which includes Bananas instead, it is served throughout the year at Lancing College in West Sussex, so each of these Mess’s were named after their Colleges.

The Sparkling Wine

Radgonske Gorice is the oldest Sparkling Wine producer in Slovenia, they started over 160 years ago in 1852, they produce 4,500,000 liters of wine every year, with a production that high, it makes sense that Radgonske Gorice is the largest producer of Sparkling Wine in Slovenia.

Radgonske Gorice – Penina Rose Extra Dry – Slovenia

Aroma 👃 “Candy red fruits, love hearts, zesty red berries, with pastry, red berry pastries on the aroma.”

Flavour 👅 “Starts dryer than expected for an Extra Dry, zesty red berries, red apples, the sweetness feels like its natural from the berries.”

Gold Medal Winner in the Dessert Category at the Glass of Bubbly Awards 2021

Pairing Notes

Pairing Notes – “A perfect palate cleanser, both the Sparkling Wine and Eton Mess are very light and delicate, the sparkling wine leaves all the natural strawberry flavours and the creamy texture, you’ll be demanding another bite.”
