Pies and Sparkling Wine

Get ready to enjoy some of the most delicious handcrafted pies with a Bottle of Sparkling Wine twice the normal size.

We’ve enjoyed many different kinds of pies over the years, including cottage pie, fish pie, apple pie, mince pies and lemon pie with a variety of different Sparkling Wines, now we’re putting some homemade pastry pies to the test with a Magnum bottle of Slovenian Sparkling Wine from Radgonske Gorice.

Slovenia has a strong history of hard-working people, working labor-intensive jobs in the fields, so when they sat down for their meals, they needed to fill up and replenish their energy, with meats, veg and potatoes.

So we decided to pair these pies with a refreshing, mouth-watering, zesty & zingy Sparkling Wine from Slovenia to cut through any greasiness and although I went into this thinking that these pies would be overly filling, I was wrong, these pies from the Great North Pie Company in England are so carefully and delicately homemade, that they almost feel light & fluffy with incredible fillings, they are so enjoyable and easy to eat.

Pie Fact: The first pie to ever be created and consumed is believed to have been around 6000 years ago, probably by the ancient Egyptians during the Neolithic Period or New Stone Age. The pie would have been baked including honey, nuts and fruits in bread dough.

Great North Pie Company

The story of the Great North Pie Company began in a humble family kitchen, just a few years ago, with them starting to sell their pies at local farmers’ markets, the pies ended up selling very well and received great feedback.

At this point in time, I can most certainly state that these are the nicest pies I have ever enjoyed, and if I’m being honest, I haven’t enjoyed too many, but the combination of the pastry with the fillings, whether it be chicken, steak or cheese, is perfect and balanced to perfection.

They make their pies so delicious in parts thanks to their all butter pastry recipe that they use, they purchase only the best quality of ingredients from producers all around the North West of England, helping to also promote their wonderful ingredients along the way.

One thing that they state, which I rather valued in reading was this “We have no plans to be the biggest pie company in the world, just one of the best” If you enjoy pies, then definitely check out the Great North Pie Company for some quality pies.

Pie Fact: The first recipe for a Pie was released during the Roman Empire, the recipe used rye-crusted pastry, goat cheese and honey.

Radgonske Gorice

The biggest and one of the most well-known Slovenian Sparkling Wineries is Radgonske Gorice, producing Sparkling Wine for everyone, supplying Slovenian Supermarkets and offering something a little more aged and complex for the wine connoisseur.

Radgonske Gorice is also the oldest Sparkling Wine producer in Slovenia, they started over 160 years ago in 1852 and now produces 4,500,000 liters of wine every year, with a production that high, which makes sense that Radgonske Gorice is the largest producer of Sparkling Wine in Slovenia.

Pies & Sparkling Wine Pairing Notes

14-Hour Braised Beef & Ale Pairing Notes – “This Beef & Ale pie is outstanding on its own, when the Sparkling Wine comes in, the Sparkling Wine changes to display a slightly sweeter lemon character, removing the meaty flavours for a while, being honest, they are both best enjoyed separately.”

Yorkshire grass-fed beef, Manchester Union lager, roast carrot & celery, redcurrant jelly, Worcestershire sauce, mustard & coriander seeds, black onion and marjoram & pepper.

Roast Chicken Pairing Notes – “The Sparkling Wine takes the lead with lemon characters, cleansing the palate, after the mid-length, you start to get a creamy roast chicken character returning until the end.”

Slow roast chicken, crispy skin, roast onions & garlic, chicken stock white sauce, lemon & poppy seeds.

Classic Lancashire Cheese & Onion Pairing Notes – “Lovely cheese and onion flavours are taken on with power by the Sparkling Wine, changing it to savoury cheddar cheese and briniging out the caramelised onions, and any lemon flavours from the Sparkling Wine doesn’t stay around for too long, the Sparkling Wine selfishly helps the pie reach a new flavour level before leaving.”

Dewlay’s Tasty Lancashire cheese, caramelised white onion white pepper, nutmeg & Japanese breadcrumbs.
