Interview With A Sommelier – Shaan Haider

The World of Wine is beautifully showcased by an army of talented Sommeliers, who help the consumer discover their next favourite bottle, understand the different regions and pair a delicious meal with the right Glass of Bubbly.

In this feature, I speak with a man from Dubai, who has helped many people to discover the vast world of Wines and Sparkling Wines, his name is Shaan Haider, let’s find out a bit about his life as a Sommelier.

Tell Us About Yourself

“Hello there my name is Shaan Haider, I’m 27 and a sommelier at Soirée located in the Buisnessbay area of Dubai. Born and raised in Pakistan, I did my degree in Commerce and had no clue that the future for me was in the wine world. I came to Dubai back in 2013 and joined the F&B industry as a waiter. Working with the hotel for 2 years I found the love of my life (Wine) and decided to pursue it professionally.”

Do You Remember Your First Experience With Sparkling Wine? When It Was And What Kind Of Wine It Was?

“Oh! How can I forget that? I had a glass of Moët & Chandon 2012 one of the best vintages I’ve ever come across of 41% Chardonnay, 26% Meunier and 33% Pinot Noir.

As soon as the first sip passed through my palate I discovered that ‘doing little things’ is not in the DNA of Moët & Chandon.”

What Inspired You To Become a Sommelier?

“I still remember the fine evening in September when I first had a sip of Chocolate Block a beautiful South African red wine and I was amazed at how gorgeous that wine was and it all started from there.

I was keen and passionate to learn more about wines, and later on, I figured out there’s a specific position that goes by the name of ‘Sommelier’ and I decided to become one.”

During Your Time As A Sommelier, What’s The Most Surprising & Interesting Thing You’ve Learnt?

“I wouldn’t be wrong if I say I have learned a lot being in a sommelier’s capacity not just about the wines but about the guests as well, their preferences and how important small details matter in service, the product knowledge gives you the confidence to talk about wines like a king.

Working with like minded people who have the same interest in wine as I do motivates me to do better and better every day. Today I feel so privileged and honored to be where I am, working with wines and sharing the knowledge with others who have just started their journey in the wine industry.”

What Sparkling Wine Producing Countries or Regions Hold A Special Place In Your Heart?

“That has to be Dom Pérignon without having a second thought, their way of producing unique vintages has made a special place in my heart and that cannot be replaced. I believe it takes a lot of courage not to produce a vintage at all if grapes and growing conditions aren’t favorable in a given year.”

Where’s The Most Memorable Place You’ve Enjoyed A Glass of Bubbly?

“I once visited a hillside area in Ras Al Khaima (UAE) and had a glass of bubbly while watching the sunset, ah! The most fascinating view to see, I think that was the best pairing I ever had with my bubbly. (Giggles)”
