Champagne Krug Vintage Prices and Investments

Champagne Krug, the master in blending, for many will signify the best of the best when it comes to Champagne, from consumers to wine professionals it is recognised as being one of the most expensive Champagnes and delivering one of the best tasting experiences. If there was a King of the King of Wines (Champagne) then Krug would certainly be looking to occupy that throne with classic labels including Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay. Famed for multi-vintage releases as well as the vintage range which we will take at look at through the years below.

Michael Edwards, in his book ‘The Finest Wines of Champagne’ quotes the Krug (Collection*) Vintage as ‘Collector’s Champagne‘ and going by what I know of many Champagne lovers out there, it is the brand to experience, to collect and to invest in.

Founded in 1843 by Johann Joseph and since 1999 they have been owned by Moét Hennessey. Based in Reims, Olivier Krug is their director with Julie Cavil. This Champagne house only has prestige cuvée (no entry level) with base wines stored in oak barrels. Famed for their clos (single vineyard / walled vineyard) labels – Their rosé label was introduced in 1983 by Henri Krug.

For the world of wine investments Champagne Krug performs incredibly well with always a high demand for their highly collectable labels with a connoisseur database globally – “Krug Champagnes also perform very well as investment pieces, with Clos d’Ambonnay 1996 achieving 87.3% growth over the past five years.OENO

Please remember that the value of anything is really down to what people wish to pay – prices go up and down and certainly, some of the prices below, depending on how long in the future you find yourself reading this article, will likely rise as their rarity grows – some might simply become sold out. Prices will also vary very much depending on the quality of the bottle such as what storage history it has, any loss of wine from oxidisation (ullage), damage to label / cork, etc. (also beware of fakes!).

With the help from Manuel Reman, Président Champagne Krug, I was able to put together a detailed list of all Krug Vintages – Thank you Manuel!
